Walnut Street Bridge, June 2025

Our town’s iconic Walnut Street Bridge has been undergoing quite a transformation lately. Crews have draped large tarps over the upper girders and columns as part of the restoration, and it’s been fascinating to watch. I’m definitely looking forward to walking across it again once the work is done.

The fresh coat of darker blue paint has surprised some folks - it’s a noticeable change - but I think once the full picture comes together and the bridge reopens, people will come around to it.

During a June workshop I led at Outdoor Chattanooga, I was drawn to the play of light and shapes the tarps created as the sun set. The silhouettes and warm evening light added a whole new layer of visual interest. I ended up making a photograph that I’m really happy with - something a little different, which is hard to achieve with such a well-loved and often-photographed landmark.
